Week 1: Introduction to Hannah!

All About Hannah!

Hello People! My name is Hannah Young and I am a New Orleans born, Dallas raised, International Studies major student at the University of Oklahoma! This is my very last semester here at OU, so I'll be graduating in December after three and a half years here. I have a mom and younger sister named Avery (she's 17 and we're very close) that live in Dallas and a dad that lives in Baltimore!

(Avery and I visiting Baltimore this past Spring Break! Selfie)
I am focused on the Middle East within my college but I have a French minor. I have studied the language for 7 years and am nearly fluent, so I figured why not! Sometimes I wish I took Arabic and then I think, hmm bettah not (Pitch Perfect reference I hope you caught). I love going to school in Oklahoma. The pace, scenery, and people are all fantabulous and my experience here has been one to remember for eternity.
(Football selfie with friends!)
Unfortunately, I do not plan on doing anything with my major. I am on the fast track to becoming a teacher right now! I was on the road to becoming a CIA officer, but due to the fact that I am incredibly tall and have a couple tattoos, I could not be admitted (CIA Officers need to be average looking [shorter than I am] and have no identifiable marks on them).

Speaking of teaching, this past summer I was a 7th grade Social Studies teacher in Austin, Texas for summer school and I absolutely loved it! It confirmed my career path for me. I am waiting to hear from Teach for America to see if I'll be teaching with them starting in June! Fingers crossed, I move to New Orleans or Austin for that. I live just by the Duck Pond here in Norman in a house with two roommates. I have two dogs (a mix of Chihuahua and Boston Terrier and a Maltese) named Vino and Barkley !
(My first class of students! I miss them all so much.)
I studied abroad last year in Vichy, France and loved everything about that experience, so maybe I'll teach English there one day and be able to use my French! During the trip, I was also able to spend a lot of time in Germany, Austria, and Italy. Best summer of my life.

I also am the Director of Childcare and Youth and Children's Ministries Associate for First Presbyterian Church Norman, so that job keeps me pretty preoccupied. I am a happy-go-lucky girl with spunk for life!

  1. Hello Hannah,
First off, I want to say that I love that you went to France for your study abroad! I have not yet had the opportunity to study abroad, but I have studied French and would love to go France someday! Also, I think your future goals are awesome; I have always loved my teachers growing up and it sounds like you are going to be great at it!

I hope you have a great last semester at OU!

    Best,
    Christian Allen

  2. I commented earlier but I don't think it went through so I'll try to remember what all I said. I think it was something along the lines of:
A job as a CIA agent sounds amazing but I'm sure being a teacher will be just as fulfilling (if not more!). Do you know anyone who teaches at Roosevelt Elementary? It'd be awesome if you could teach French to the kids there. Watching kids acquire language is so fascinating.

I'm sure you'll do great in life and I hope everything goes well! :)

(PS, I totally messed up and posted this on the storytelling post. Sorry!)

  3. Wow, Hannah, I never thought about that qualification for the CIA... but of course it makes sense! And I am glad that unexpected snag could lead you into the world of teaching! I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher, and I cannot imagine doing anything else... and teaching languages is the best of all. I've taught foreign languages (Latin and Polish and Greek), and I've taught English, and I love it all. I hope you will find teaching to be a joy also!

About your Introduction post - people will be coming to visit this all semester long (based on the random blog groups), so if you have a chance to edit this and add an image, that would be great. It looks like the image you wanted to include here originally did not go through for some reason. Any kind of image would be great... blog posts are always better with images I think. :-)

  5. Hannah,

First of all, wow. I am so jealous of everything you have done in your life! Haha. I also wanted to work for the government (FBI), but am hopefully pre-med now. I thought about the CIA, but decided FBI is the way I wanted to go. And now, I'm not doing anything with my major, either! I think it's so cool that you are focused on Middle Eastern studies, I study Arabic here! I love love LOVE your picture of you cartwheeling across Europe. I thought that was so cute and unique. You look like you have a lot of fun! I can't wait to see other things you post this semester!

  6. Hi Hannah!
I am so jealous that you got to study abroad in France last year. I went to France (and Italy) a few years ago and I absolutely loved both places. I definitely want to go back sometime soon. I had no idea that there were such restrictions when it comes to being in the CIA. That would be such an awesome job!
I love that you added so many pictures in your introduction because it makes a post so much more interesting and fun! Good luck with this last semester (I am also jealous that you are graduating early)!! It sounds like you have a lot of fun in life, and I think you will make a great teacher very soon!

  7. I'm envious that you were able to study abroad in France, I've wanted to do a semester abroad for a long time! Once you're in Europe, you can visit so many other countries by train as well. I'm impressed that you were able to graduate in just three and a half years. By the time I'm done, I'll have gone about five years!

  8. You sound like you've had a pretty exciting college experience! I've always wanted to study broad in Italy, but I guess France is good too haha! Bummer about not being able to join the CIA, but I think that it just means you're too unique and cool to fit in with them. I hope teaching works out for you, because we definitely need awesome teachers. I'm sure you'll be great at it!

  9. I am so sorry that you were unable to become a CIA officer that would have been super awesome! But it is pretty cool that you have gone abroad and are planning on teaching! There is a program called Breakthrough where you go and teach for an entire summer and you are teaching kids who are the first generation in their families to want to go to college. Meaning that they are super motivated! My best friend/ roomie went this most recent summer and absolutely loved it, she hasn't stopped talking about it since and plans to go back next summer. There are tons of different locations in the states, she was in Fort Worth, and there are so many teaching positions to fill!

I am pretty sure that this is the link to the program if you are at all interested! If you are really interested, let me know and I can try to get you in touch with my friend, she is working on recruiting people, and she can talk you through the application!

  10. Huh, interesting fact concerning the CIA. A teacher once told me of a kid who purposefully got C's in all his classes because he wanted to become a spy and outstanding grades were a no-no.
Teaching is a great alternative, however. I'm going into teaching as well, but I'm looking more at the college level. I would suggest looking into the JET program - it's to teach English in Japan, but they might be hooked up with some places who send you to teach in France and it'd be a good starting point.
And you are certainly way more active than me. I'm happy to get in a movie every now and then - got too much reading to do otherwise!

  11. Wow you have an incredible story! Sorry to hear about the CIA but congrats on deciding to be a teacher. Your summer sounds like a lot of fun. Congrats on graduating this year and in just three and a half years! I wish you the best of luck with the rest of this semester and with all your adventures after college.

  12. Wow Hannah, you really are an interesting woman! You seem very ambitious and I am sure you will be an awesome teacher, especially with your experience already in such incredible leadership roles. I am sorry to hear about the CIA but I am sure you will find many passions in life that keep you happy. :) You have had amazing experiences already. I'm jealous you were able to study abroad! I have always wanted to. Good luck after you graduate and congratulations! It's going to feel amazing to finally get that degree!

  13. Hey there Hannah! You seem like a really incredible and accomplished girl! I love how adventurous you are and you seem like a really positive person! It’s funny that you are almost fluent in French after taking it for only 7 years, but as a Vietnamese-American, born and bred, my Vietnamese is really broken! I have been working on it lately so hopefully in the next 7 years, I can be as fluent in Vietnamese as you are in French!

  14. Wow, Hannah! Sounds like you're busy. I love that you spent time abroad, that's amazing! A few of my friends went to a special elementary school where they studied French and English at the same time and are fluent. They all studied abroad in France and loved it! I used to be an IAS major and I loved it, but you're right, I realized I didn't want to be a teacher and didn't really have any idea what I would do with an Asian Studies major. One of my best friends is really interested in Middle Eastern studies and took Arabic for two years. She said it was incredibly difficult though and she already had Spanish so she ended up dropping. I also know someone who interned for Teach For America this summer and loved teaching! She taught a group of high school freshmen (WHAT) and said that she really enjoyed doing that. I'm not sure I could do that age group... Or really teaching at all. But it sounds like you're having a great semester! Good luck with everything.

  15. Wow, you’ve already got some much going on in your life! It’s really admirable that you want to be a teacher and that you already have a good amount of experience under your belt. With your aptitude in French, you’ll be looking at a lot of teaching options in your future. It would be awesome if you could teach abroad in a place like France. Good luck with your final semester. I hope it’s a great one for you!

  16. Hannah! I'm glad we're finally in the same commenting group so I haven an excuse to creep on your life. I LOVE your blog background, and I'm slightly jealous of it. Also, I learned about your dog named Vino! I want pictures! I'm so excited for you that you've found what you love to do in life, and I can't wait to hear stories about your students when you're all grown up and teaching! Hope your last semester is going fantastically!

  17. Hey Hannah! That's so exciting that you're graduating in December! And awesome that you're graduating a semester early - congrats!
A CIA officer?! That is crazy! I'm sorry that didn't work out for you though, but it sounds like you're going to make an awesome teacher! My best friend wants to go to Doctoral school in Boston and really loves the city, plus the weather sounds so much nicer than Oklahoma's haha.

    Nice getting to meet you!

  18. Hannah! You'll love Boston, I have been there a few times and it is always depressing to leave. My fiancé is a teacher and I'm sure you will love it just as much as she does. I love that you included so many pictures in your introduction and congrats on your upcoming graduation. I graduate in December as well, we're almost done!

  19. I never thought to consider what it takes to work in the CIA, especially when it comes to physical characteristics. I wonder how far "identifiable" is taken. I'm glad to see that you've immersed yourself in language. While I haven't studied as nearly as long as you, I've tried to do the same with Italian. Still, I'd love to start learning a bit of French!

  20. Hi Hannah,
That's cool how you wanted to be in the CIA. Like many other commenters, I had no idea what being in the CIA entails. I like how you decided to change your career path and pursue teaching even though you're close to graduating, most people settle into what they graduated with even though they may not like it. Congrats on graduating in December!

  21. Hi Hannah! Congrats on being so close to graduation! It's great that you got some experience teaching over the summer to know that's what you want to do. As a lot of other people have said, I'd never thought about what the CIA looks for in recruits. That was really interesting to me. Also, it's amazing that you got to study abroad in France! I've heard it's absolutely amazing. Good luck on the rest of your semester!

  22. Hi, Hannah! What an interesting experience you've had these last couple of years! I guess in my head I know that people obviously have to apply to be in the CIA just like any other job, but I guess I never really thought of it in quite so ordinary terms. I'm sorry that didn't work out for you but I'm glad that you found in teaching something that you love (hopefully!) just as much. I have to say, though, that I can't think of a more drastic career change! I absolutely loved that pic stitch of you cartwheeling across Europe! You are just the type of whimsical free-spirit type I could see being friends with in real life (and you love kids, like me! :) )Good luck on your graduation and the rest of your career!

  23. Hey Hannah,

Congratulations on graduating this semester! I am also graduating this semester! I am sure you are super excited to finish your schooling. I know I am. I am excited to see where life will take me. I had no idea there were such strict regulations on appearance in order to be a CIA officer. I hope that you are able get a great teaching job! Happy graduating!
